How We Test & Review
We don’t publish a recommendation we can’t stand behind. Here’s exactly how we get there.
1. We start with the shortlist
For any category, we identify the products real buyers consider โ bestsellers, highly rated models, and picks from other reputable testing outlets. We then whittle it down to the models worth your time, ignoring no-name clones and spec-sheet filler.
2. We verify the numbers
Marketing numbers are unreliable. Wherever possible, we use independent, third-party data:
- CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) โ verified through the AHAM Verifide program, not manufacturer claims.
- Noise โ manufacturer dB ratings cross-checked against published measurements.
- Filter replacement cost & cadence โ from manufacturer documentation and current retail pricing.
When a spec isn’t independently verifiable, we say so rather than repeat the marketing copy.
3. We weigh total cost of ownership
The sticker price is just the start. We calculate:
- Filter replacement cost per year
- Energy usage (Energy Star data where available)
- Expected lifespan
A cheap unit with expensive, fast-clogging filters can be the most expensive choice. We surface that math.
4. We weigh real-world use
Where we’ve been able to get hands on a unit, we note how it performs in a real room: how it sounds on low vs. high, how intuitive the controls are, how easy filters are to change. When we rely on published measurements and verified owner feedback, we’re upfront about it.
5. We score, then write the pros and the cons
Every review gets a score out of 5, a “what we like” list, and โ just as important โ a “what we don’t” list. No product is perfect, and pretending otherwise helps no one.
6. We keep it current
Prices, specs, and availability change. We revisit and update our reviews and lists as products and prices move. The “updated” date on each article tells you when we last checked.
