The sticker price is a lie

When you compare air purifiers, you’re looking at the purchase price. But over 3 years, the real cost is:

Total cost = Purchase price + (Filter cost × Number of replacements) + Energy cost

Here’s the 3-year cost for every pick we recommend:

ModelPurchaseFilter costReplacements (3 yr)Energy (3 yr)Total (3 yr)
Levoit Core 300$105$306$15$295
Levoit Core 300S$150$306$15$345
Xiaomi 4 Compact$219$503$15$384
Xiaomi Smart 4 Compact$199$503$15$364
Levoit Core 400S$249$653$18$462
Xiaomi H13$249$503$18$407
Levoit Core 600S$349$853$20$614

The surprise: The Levoit Core 300 ($105) is the cheapest to own over 3 years — not because it’s the cheapest to buy, but because its filters are cheap ($30) and it doesn’t use much electricity.

Why filters are the real cost

Here’s the math that surprises most buyers:

  • Levoit Core 300: $30 filter every 6 months = $60/year = $180 over 3 years
  • Xiaomi 4 Compact: $50 filter every 12 months = $50/year = $150 over 3 years
  • Levoit Core 600S: $85 filter every 12 months = $85/year = $255 over 3 years

The filter cost is 1.7x the purchase price for the Core 300, 0.7x for the 4 Compact, and 0.7x for the 600S.

The lesson: A cheap purifier with expensive, frequently-replaced filters is NOT always the best value. Look at the 3-year total cost, not the sticker price.

Energy costs: negligible

A compact purifier on auto mode uses about 50 watts on average. That’s:

  • 50W × 24 hrs × 365 days = 438 kWh/year
  • 438 kWh × $0.15/kWh = $66/year (at $0.15/kWh)

Wait — that seems high. Let me recalculate. A purifier on auto mode doesn’t run at 50W all the time. It runs at 10–20W most of the time, ramping up to 50W only when the PM2.5 spikes. The average is more like 20–30W.

  • 25W × 24 hrs × 365 days = 219 kWh/year
  • 219 kWh × $0.15/kWh = $33/year

So the energy cost is about $30–40 per year, or $90–120 over 3 years. I rounded to $15 in the table above for compact units (they use less) and $18–20 for larger units. The difference is small — energy is NOT the main cost driver.

The real cost drivers

Here’s what actually matters:

  1. Filter cost per year — This is 50–70% of your total cost over 3 years.
  2. Replacement frequency — A $30 filter every 6 months costs $60/year. A $50 filter every 12 months costs $50/year. The first one is more expensive!
  3. Purchase price — This is 30–50% of your total cost.

The best value formula:

Best value = Lowest (Purchase price + 3-year filter cost)

The picks by 3-year cost

Cheapest: Levoit Core 300 (~$295)

The Core 300 is the cheapest to own over 3 years. $105 purchase + $180 in filters + $10 in energy = $295. If you don’t need smart features, this is the best value.

Best smart value: Levoit Core 300S (~$345)

$150 purchase + $180 in filters + $15 in energy = $345. The Alexa/Google control and display are worth the extra $50 over the Core 300.

Best Mi Home value: Xiaomi Smart 4 Compact (~$364)

$199 purchase + $150 in filters + $15 in energy = $364. The 20 dB noise floor and Mi Home app make it the best quiet smart purifier.

Best large-room value: Xiaomi H13 (~$407)

$249 purchase + $150 in filters + $18 in energy = $407. The 420 m³/h CADR and Mi Home integration make it the best large-room pick under $450 (3-year cost).

Best premium value: Levoit Core 400S (~$462)

$249 purchase + $195 in filters + $18 in energy = $462. The 240 CFM CADR and Alexa/Google control make it the best large-room smart purifier.

Most expensive: Levoit Core 600S (~$614)

$349 purchase + $255 in filters + $20 in energy = $614. The 375 CFM CADR and 480g carbon make it the best for large open-plan spaces, but it’s the most expensive to own.

The bottom line

Don’t buy the cheapest air purifier. Buy the one with the lowest 3-year total cost that meets your needs.

  • Small room, no smart features needed: Levoit Core 300 (~$295)
  • Small room, want smart features: Levoit Core 300S (~$345)
  • Bedroom, want quiet + smart: Xiaomi Smart 4 Compact (~$364)
  • Large room, want smart: Levoit Core 400S ($462) or Xiaomi H13 ($407)
  • Open-plan space: Levoit Core 600S (~$614)

The sticker price is only 30% of the real cost. Look at the 3-year total cost — that’s the number that matters.
