How we chose and tested

Small spaces change the math. In a studio or dorm you don’t need the highest CADR on the market — you need a unit that’s compact, quiet enough to sleep next to, and cheap to keep running, without wasting money on coverage you’ll never use.

We focused on Chinese brands with a global presence — Xiaomi and Levoit — because they offer the best price-to-performance ratio for small spaces, and both have easy global filter availability.

We ranked these four on:

  1. Noise at the low setting — the single most important trait when your bed is six feet from the unit.
  2. Footprint and portability — floor and desk space are at a premium in small apartments.
  3. Running costs — frequent filter swaps hurt more when you’re on a student or early-career budget.
  4. Coverage — matched to rooms from ~150 to ~517 sq ft.

What we left out

We skipped tower purifiers that dominate a small room’s floor, anything rated over ~30 dB on low, and units whose “coverage” claims far exceed their actual CADR. In a small space, a focused, quiet machine beats a loud, oversized one every time.
