How we chose and tested
Large rooms change the math. In a 500+ sq ft living room or an open-plan space, a compact purifier (like the Levoit Core 300) is out of its depth — it’ll run constantly on high and still struggle to keep up. You need a unit with high CADR and enough airflow to cycle the air in the space within a reasonable time.
We focused on Chinese brands with a global presence — Xiaomi and Levoit — and ranked these four on:
- CADR (AHAM-verified) — the honest number for how fast the unit cleans.
- Coverage — matched to rooms from 200 to 1,000+ sq ft.
- Smart features — app control, voice control, and auto mode.
- Running costs — filter cost and energy usage.
The picks, in detail
#1: Levoit Core 600S — Best for open-plan spaces (800+ sq ft)
The Core 600S is the most powerful purifier in Levoit’s Core series, with a 375 CFM PM1 CADR (AHAM Verifide certified). It’s the only unit in our comparison that can genuinely handle a large open-plan space (living + dining + kitchen, 800–1,200 sq ft) with a single unit.
The 480g of activated carbon is 2x what you get in the Core 400S, making it significantly better for odors and VOCs. In a new home with off-gassing furniture, or a kitchen-adjacent living room with cooking smells, the extra carbon makes a real difference.
The catch: It’s tall (24 inches) and heavy (30 lbs). You’ll want to find a permanent spot. The filter cost ($80–90) is the highest in the Core series.
#2: Levoit Core 400S — Best for standard living rooms (300–700 sq ft)
The Core 400S is the sweet spot for most living rooms. Its 240 CFM CADR (AHAM-verified) is the same as the Coway AP-1512HH and the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max, at a lower price with more smart features.
The 240g of carbon is enough for light odors and cooking smells. The Alexa/Google integration means you can say “Hey Google, turn up the living room purifier” without getting up.
The catch: In a very large open-plan space (800+ sq ft), it’ll work but take longer. For that, step up to the Core 600S.
#3: Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Compact — Best for medium rooms on a budget
If your “large room” is actually a 300–500 sq ft living room or a medium-sized bedroom, the 4 Compact is the best value. Its 400 m³/h CADR (about 235 CFM) is close to the Core 400S, at a lower price ($219 vs $249).
The Mi Home app is more complete than Levoit’s, and the 20 dB noise floor is the quietest in our comparison.
The catch: Mi Home app only — no direct Alexa/Google integration. If you’re in the Google Home ecosystem, the Core 400S is the better pick.
#4: Xiaomi Air Purifier (H13) — Best for medium-large rooms
The H13’s 420 m³/h CADR (about 245 CFM) is slightly higher than the 4 Compact, making it the better pick for a 400–540 sq ft room. The Mi Home integration is the same, and the air-quality LED ring is a nice touch.
The catch: Larger footprint than the Compact. In a small room, the 4 Compact is the better fit.
Sizing your purifier for a large room
Here’s the quick reference:
| Room size | Minimum smoke CADR | Best pick |
|---|---|---|
| 200–300 sq ft | ~150 CFM | Xiaomi 4 Compact / Levoit Core 300S |
| 300–500 sq ft | ~200 CFM | Xiaomi 4 Compact / Levoit Core 400S |
| 500–700 sq ft | ~330 CFM | Levoit Core 400S / Xiaomi H13 |
| 700–1,000 sq ft | ~470 CFM | Levoit Core 600S |
| 1,000+ sq ft | ~660 CFM | Levoit Core 600S (or 2 units) |
The bottom line
For most living rooms (300–700 sq ft), the Levoit Core 400S is the best pick — AHAM-verified CADR, smart features, and a price that makes sense. For open-plan spaces (800+ sq ft), the Levoit Core 600S is the only unit in our comparison that can handle the air volume with a single unit.
If you’re in the Mi Home ecosystem, the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Compact is the best value for medium rooms — same CADR as the Core 400S for $30 less.
