How we chose and tested

We started by researching which Chinese-brand air purifiers are actually available and well-reviewed for overseas buyers. We focused on brands with a global presence — meaning the product is sold on Amazon in the US, EU, or other major markets, and replacement filters are readily available.

That narrowed the field to two brands that dominate the overseas market:

  1. Xiaomi — the world’s largest smart-home company by revenue, with a dedicated US e-commerce presence
  2. Levoit — a Chinese home-appliance company with a global distribution network and 50+ country presence

From there we compared three things that matter more than marketing:

  1. CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) — the verified number for how fast a unit actually cleans dust, pollen, and smoke.
  2. Noise — because a purifier that’s too loud to run at night ends up unplugged.
  3. Total cost of ownership — filter replacement cost and cadence, not just the sticker price.

What we left out

We skipped:

  • Brands that are China-only (352, IAM, 华为智选, 美的, 格力, 树新风) — these are excellent products by all accounts, but they’re not available for purchase outside China. We’ll revisit them if/when they expand overseas.
  • No-name clones with unverifiable specs
  • Any unit without at least a real HEPA-grade filter
  • Models whose marketing “coverage” claims don’t match their actual CADR

The Chinese-brand advantage

There’s a reason Chinese brands dominate the global air-purifier market. Three things stand out:

  1. Price — Chinese manufacturers have unmatched supply-chain efficiency. A Xiaomi purifier with H13 True HEPA, smart features, and 400 m³/h CADR costs less than a Coway unit with lower specs.
  2. Smart integration — Xiaomi’s Mi Home ecosystem is the most complete smart-home platform in the world. Their purifiers don’t just connect to an app; they work with your lights, thermostat, and security camera.
  3. Filter availability — Levoit and Xiaomi both ship replacement filters globally via Amazon. You won’t be stuck waiting for a Chinese import.
